Plenty of employers say they’re flexible. Fewer can tell you what that means on a Tuesday morning when the school calls. QBE is one of the ones that can, so we wanted to take a proper look.
Who are QBE?
QBE is an international insurer and reinsurer with a local presence in 26 countries. They help people and businesses manage risk and deal with uncertainty, across commercial, personal and specialty insurance. Not the most glamorous sentence you’ll read today, but it matters for what comes next: this is a big, established business taking working life seriously.
Flexibility with a framework behind it
QBE’s approach is called Flex@QBE. It covers where, when and how people work, including hybrid working, different working structures and a relaxed dress code. The point is to find the right balance for each person, their team and the work. They’re also honest that time together still matters for collaboration and wellbeing, which is refreshing. Flexibility that pretends you never need to see a colleague doesn’t usually last.
Built for families, all kinds of them
This is where QBE stands out. They’ve set global minimum standards for parental leave, so everyone gets inclusive paid leave, whatever their gender and however they become a parent. In the UK, QBE was the first insurer to earn Family Friendly Workplace accreditation. For anyone who has ever had to choose between a career step and their family, that’s worth knowing.
Support beyond the day job
QBE’s benefits framework is called ‘At my best’. It covers work/life balance, money, health, community and career. In practice that means family friendly policies, modern workplaces, employee networks and access to employee assistance wherever you’re based.
The recognition
Their awards back it up, including:
- General Insurer of the Year, British Insurance Awards 2026
- Best Large Insurance Employer, Insurance Post 2026
- Top 30 organisation for learning, UK Learning Power 100 Index
- D&I Initiative of the Year, British Insurance Awards 2025
