Danika Priim Talks Online Trolling and The Future of Women’s Rugby

This week we sit down with former England Women’s Rugby star Danika Priim to discuss her journey in the sport from school days to representing her country in the World Cup.

Danika Priim shares her experiences overcoming societal barriers as a woman in rugby and highlights the lack of support she received early in her career. She also reflects on the progress that has been made in recent years for women’s rugby in terms of funding, media representation, and participation. Danica is a passionate advocate for continuing to push the boundaries in women’s sports and shares her optimism for the future of rugby league. Tune in for an inspiring conversation on gender equality, following your dreams, and never giving up on change.

Early Days in Rugby:
Danika grew up in a household with three brothers, learning from a young age to hold her own in competitive sports. She tried various activities as a teen but found her passion for rugby through the social connections and team atmosphere in university. Despite no women’s rugby programs in her school days, Miller worked hard to improve and eventually captained teams at the regional and national levels.

Pioneering the Women’s Game:
As one of the early stars of England Women’s Rugby in the 2010s, Danika helped put the sport on the map. However, she faced challenges like having to take unpaid leave from her teaching job to play in the 2017 World Cup. Miller reflects on the lack of support at the time but is proud to have been part of growing the women’s game.

Injury and Advocacy:
Danika suffered an ACL injury while playing for Leeds Rhinos but had to pay out of pocket for her surgery due to lack of insurance. This experience led her to advocate for better medical support for women athletes. Her speaking up directly resulted in improved injury policies for clubs like Leeds Rhinos.

Continued Progress in Rugby and Media:
Danika discusses increasing participation in women’s rugby at youth levels as well as her own success as a pundit and presenter. She remains passionate about empowering the next generation through grassroots programs and representation.
