Discover How Hidden Traumas and Limiting Beliefs Fuel Imposter Syndrome

We’ve all felt like a fraud at some point in our careers, doubting our abilities and worrying we don’t deserve our success. This imposter syndrome can quietly undermine our confidence and wellbeing if left unaddressed.

In this podcast episode, Cathy Gifford shares her personal journey of overcoming imposter syndrome through self-awareness and subconscious work. As a former finance executive who experienced early career success, Cathy found herself struggling with perfectionism, excessive work hours, and an internal sense that she was undeserving of her role.

“It wasn’t until conversations with colleagues revealed they didn’t share the same self-critical thoughts that I began to recognize I was experiencing imposter syndrome,” Cathy explains. “From there, I embarked on a process of self-discovery to understand the root causes.”

Through mindfulness practices like meditation and journaling, Cathy was able to connect with past childhood traumas and limiting beliefs stored in her subconscious mind. “A powerful mind mapping exercise uncovered how experiences from my past had shaped the rules I lived by, manifesting as imposter syndrome,” she reflects.

“By addressing these subconscious patterns using modalities like belief coding and hypnosis, I was able to clear the past memories fueling my imposter syndrome,” Cathy shares. “This inner transformation empowered me to leave my high-pressure job and pursue my passion for coaching others.”

As the founder of Empower Yourself Academy, Cathy now helps clients overcome imposter syndrome through similar subconscious work. “I also offer insights for organisations on promoting open conversations around this issue and preventing its negative impacts, especially on women’s career advancement,” she adds.

Cathy’s story demonstrates how addressing imposter syndrome at its root cause level can be an incredibly healing journey of self-acceptance. “For those struggling with this common yet debilitating issue, the first step may simply be listening within,” she advises.

Imposter syndrome affects millions of individuals worldwide, regardless of age, gender, or profession. It’s a psychological phenomenon characterized by feelings of self-doubt, insecurity, and a persistent fear of being exposed as a fraud, despite evidence of one’s accomplishments and abilities.

The Prevalence of Imposter Syndrome

According to research conducted by the International Journal of Behavioral Science, an estimated 70% of people will experience imposter syndrome at some point in their lives. This pervasive phenomenon can have profound effects on individuals’ mental health, wellbeing, and career advancement.

Imposter Syndrome in the Workplace

Imposter syndrome is particularly prevalent in professional settings, where individuals may feel pressure to perform at a high level and prove their worth. In fact, a study published in the Journal of Vocational Behavior found that up to 80% of women experience imposter syndrome in the workplace, compared to 60% of men.

The Impact on Mental Health and Performance

The psychological toll of imposter syndrome can be significant, leading to feelings of anxiety, stress, and depression. Research from the American Psychological Association has shown that individuals struggling with imposter syndrome are more likely to experience burnout and have lower job satisfaction and performance.

While imposter syndrome can be challenging to overcome, there are effective strategies and resources available to help individuals build resilience and self-confidence. From practicing self-compassion and reframing negative thoughts to seeking support from mentors and peers, there are many paths to overcoming imposter syndrome and realizing one’s full potential.
