Don’t Let Menopause or Women’s Health Hold You Back

  • Helen Tomlinson took on the role of Menopause Employment Champion following a report by the 50 Plus Choices group, which highlighted the need for a more menopause-friendly work environment to retain and encourage women over 50 in the workplace.
  • The role aims to reduce the number of women leaving the workplace due to menopause-related issues and bring back the 630,000 women aged 45-55 currently on universal credit by educating employers about menopause and perimenopause.
  • In her day job as the head of talent inclusion for the Adecco Group, one of the largest recruitment organisations in the UK, Tomlinson had launched a menopause policy and advocated for more government action around menopause.
  • This advocacy work led to her appointment as the Menopause Champion.
  • Helen emphasises that menopause and perimenopause are not just health issues but also employment and equality issues that require open discussions and understanding in the workplace.
  • Her experience with perimenopause influenced her work. She advocates for asking the employee about the adjustments they need, instead of making assumptions, to make the workplace more accommodating.
  • Helen notes that many women experience heavy periods, which she feels should be addressed more openly at work. This will support cultural change and make the workplace more inclusive for women’s health issues.
  • The role of Menopause Champion also involves helping employers navigate potentially difficult topics. To facilitate this, Helen recommends sharing lived experiences and creating open dialogues about these issues.
  • Helen is also keen on breaking down barriers in male-dominated workplaces. She advocates for ‘men-only safe spaces’ to initiate these sensitive discussions and increase understanding about menopause.
  • Ultimately, the goal is to create an environment where employees are comfortable discussing their health issues, such as menopause, without feeling judged or penalised.
