2024 Apprentice winner Rachel Woolford talks the pressure of the show, online trolls and how to back yourself

2024 Apprentice winner Rachel Woolford

Rachel Woolford is the founder of the popular fitness studios North Studio with studios in Leeds and Harrogate we are excited to see where her new studio will be located. As the winner of The Apprentice, 2024, she has proven herself as a talented businesswoman against tough competition.

We were lucky enough to chat with Rachel on the Women. Work. Wellbeing. podcast about her inspiring entrepreneurial journey, online trolls, beings the first female finalist in a long time and the future working with Lord Sugar.

Early Entrepreneurial Spirit

Rachel has dreamed of starting her own business since age 10, inspired by watching her father’s career. She studied Economics and Management in university but disliked her career in accountancy. This led Rachel to pursue her passion in the fitness industry through personal training.

Starting Her Own Business

Opening her first North Studio location presented challenges of finding the right space and learning from mistakes. After viewing several options, Rachel knew she had found the perfect location. Now with sites in Leeds and Harrogate, North Studio has grown into a thriving community hub.

The Apprentice Audition Process

Rachel discussed the intensity of auditioning for the hit BBC show, from uncertain interviews to limited resources on tasks with tight deadlines. She kept her win a secret for over a year to maximise viewership for the finale reveal.

Facing Sexism as a Female Founder

Rachel’s gender led to sexist online abuse and false media stories questioning her business acumen. She was sent messages such as “You only won because Lord Sugar fell for a pretty face”. But Rachel is using her platform to educate and inspire young women entrepreneurs to pursue their goals.

Overcoming Adversity

Rachel draws inspiration from her supportive team at North Studio and her father’s example of resilience. With a focus on consistency, she plans to expand to a third location while mentoring the next generation. Rachel’s determination and grit epitomise the entrepreneurial spirit. Her story shows how passion and hard work can help female founders smash through barriers to success.
