We’re MI6, also known as the Secret Intelligence Service. Our mission is to protect the security and economic wellbeing of the UK from overseas threats such as regional instability, terrorism, and cyber-attacks. Working across the globe and in close partnership with MI5 and GCHQ, we help the Government to counter these threats through the provision of secret intelligence. A role in MI6 will see you providing vital support to this work, within a supportive and encouraging environment that puts the emphasis on teamwork.
The Role:
This is a unique and exciting opportunity for an experienced Electrical Technician to join MI6’s specialist global maintenance team. In this valuable technical role, you’ll manage the upkeep of our global estate, ensuring electrical systems are safe, effective, and efficient at our sites all over the world. You may therefore be asked to travel at short notice, including weekends. You can expect to be abroad for 150-170 days per year, so you will always be supported by our team of reliable and professional technicians – we’re a small team and rely on each other, whether that be from physically being overseas on a job together or at the end of the phone. This is a truly unique role you won’t find anywhere else.
Wherever you’re working, you’ll install and repair electrical systems in commercial and domestic premises. Day to day, you’ll diagnose faults, rewire systems and monitor them as necessary. You could be working on fire alarms one day and air conditioning the next. Whatever the task, you’ll assess and scope works, identify what equipment’s needed, and provide reports on predicted costs.
In short, you’ll provide a global reactive and planned maintenance service, working independently to locate, diagnose and rectify faults. If sub-contractors are involved, you’ll see that their performance meets the required standards. You’ll also advise project managers on larger works, minimise disruption in occupied areas and support other tradespeople on electrical, plumbing and building projects. You’ll take pride in providing exceptional customer service at all times.
About You
At this level, we’ll expect you to tackle maintenance, fault finding, repairs, installation (lighting, power, A/C, fire systems) and safety compliance. You’ll also be mentoring junior colleagues, so sound expertise is vital.
To join us, you must have completed an Electrical Apprenticeship to NVQ level 3 or above, including AM1 and AM2. Inspecting and Testing certification to City & Guilds 2391 (or equivalent) will be essential too. Along with these qualifications, you’ll need experience of low and extra-low voltage wiring systems, alarm systems and three phase electrical installations. You should also be adept at installing and maintaining lighting and have JIB/ECS-approved status.
Newly qualified? Highly experienced? It doesn’t matter. What’s important is that you have the necessary skills. We’re looking for a problem solver who’s familiar with NICEIC and understands electrical infrastructure and wiring documents. Ready to travel and fit to fly, you’ll be happy working alone or as part of a team.
Training and Development
Continuous professional and personal development is all part of the package. We’ll help you keep up with evolving standards and changes within the industry. If you need further training on electrical installation and maintenance, we’ll be happy to oblige. That way, your skillset will always be up to scratch.
It all starts with initial in-house training from our team of experts. If further skills are necessary – for example in coding or new technologies – there’s the potential to learn through external courses.
Rewards and Benefits
You’ll receive a starting salary of £37,958 – £42,458 and other benefits including:
25 Days Annual Leave automatically rising to 30 days after 5 years’ service, and an additional 10.5 days public and privilege holidays
Opportunities to be recognised through our employee performance scheme
Interest-free season ticket loan
Excellent pension scheme
Cycle to work scheme
Facilities such as a gym, restaurant and on-site coffee bars (at some locations)
Paid parental and adoption leave.

At MI6 diversity and inclusion are critical to our mission. To protect the UK, we need a truly diverse workforce that reflects the society we serve. This includes diversity in every sense of the word: those with different backgrounds, ages, ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientations, ways of thinking and those with disabilities or neurodivergent conditions. We therefore welcome and encourage applications from everyone, including those from groups that are under-represented in our workforce such as women, those from an ethnic minority background, people with disabilities and those from low socio-economic backgrounds.
