Job overview
Advanced practitioners (APs) enhance capacity and capability within multi-professional teams by supporting existing and more established roles. They help to improve clinical continuity, provide more patient-focused care, enhance the multi-professional team and help to provide safe, accessible and high-quality care for patients.
The Advanced Practice Training Programme Directors (TPD’s) will be experienced Advanced Clinical Practitioners who understand the AP framework and can support all aspects of training, supervision, job roles and workforce need for Advanced Practitioners.
The role is to work with and support the Regional Faculty for Advancing Practice in leading the delivery of a wide range of functions, aligned to the Health Education England mandate.
Main duties of the job
The Regional Faculty for Advancing Practice is looking for Advanced Clinical Practitioners to support the development and delivery of AP roles within a variety of healthcare settings. They will report to the Regional Faculty for Advancing Practice and support National Centre for Advancing Practice work on APs.
There are up to 4 TPD positions open to application.
This is a 12 month secondment for 1 / 2 day a week in one of the following clinical areas:
- Mental Health
- Maternity
- Children’s & Young People
- Ophthalmology

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Working with the Regional Faculty for Advancing Practice and reporting to the Regional Faculty lead/ Supervision and Assessment Lead(s) the TPD’s will work in all aspects of AP training.
They will liaise with Universities, employing organisations, Supervisors and Trainees to support a safe learning environment that creates the best experience for everyone involved.
The TPD may attend meetings appropriate to their specialty in order to understand the AP programme information available to aid in their work. This may include identifying recruitment opportunities and advising Trust Leads regarding workforce planning.
They may be instrumental in improving standards of Supervision for AP trainees and escalate a support plan to trainees who require remediation.
This is an evolving role that allows the successful candidate to shape their role within the regional Faculty objectives and be innovative to have a positive effect upon future AP learners within the region.
To oversee AP programme management and advise the Regional Faculty for Advancing Practice on the following matters:
- Specialty-specific matters and trainee/trainer concerns;
- Support Recruitment to AP training posts and programmes;
- To use educational resources to support learners within programmes to fulfil their full potential.
- AP programme management, including assessments, progression, support and remediation, trainee management, careers support and less than full-time training.
To work closely with the Regional Faculty for Advancing Practice to support implementation of the HEE Quality Framework:
- To emphasise the importance and promote the development of a quality learning environment for all learners.

Secondments
Applicants from within the NHS will be offered on a secondment basis only, agreement should be obtained from their employer prior to submitting the application.
Salary Progression
Applicants will commence at the bottom of Band 8b with a pay step increase after 5 years’ service.
These salaries are offered in accordance with NHS Terms and Conditions and the HEE Pay Progression Policy and are subject to annual cost of living review.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Educated to Masters’ level, or equivalent level of experience of working at a senior level in specialist area and healthcare leadership
- Current membership of regulatory body / Fellowship of a College, Faculty, professional association
- An understanding of AP roles within a range of Healthcare settings from all professional groups (nursing, AHPs and pharmacists)
Desirable criteria
- Extensive knowledge of healthcare education management or commissioning, acquired through post graduate diploma or equivalent experience or training
Skills and Knowledge
Essential criteria
- An understanding of the educational requirements of AP trainees in practice
- Understanding of developments involving the relevant Colleges/Faculties, professional bodies, related NHS organisations and regulatory bodies
Desirable criteria
- Active involvement in, and up to date with, appraisal processes and educational assessment
- Demonstrates sound judgement in the absence of clear guidelines or precedent, seeking advice as necessary from more senior management when appropriate
Experience
Essential criteria
- Considerable experience of working with learners in training in an educational context
- Experience of clinical and educational leadership and innovation, including managing a multi-professional team
Desirable criteria
- Demonstrable track record of delivery in service and education
- Awareness of funding streams for healthcare education
